The far west side of Manhattan has been reinventing itself for many years and with it, gentrification, tower block apartments, businesses and restaurants.
Ousía – meaning Essence/Flavor – on 57th Street at 11th Avenue is one prime example. This beautifully designed restaurant spares no expense at a glorious interior design and prime real estate grandeur.
Close to the Hudson River and skyline of New Jersey, it has fine Mediterranean dining, Greek cuisine and a Happy Hour in an ambience that’s both tranquil and soothing.
I had the pleasure of sampling the Happy Hour menu recently prior to seeing a film at the new and adjacent Landmark 57 cinema.
HH is available between the hours of 5pm and 7pm. My dining partner and I chose the Ousía Mule (Cardoman-infused Vodka, Aperol, Lime & Ginger Beer) and Daiquiri du Jour (Rum of the day, Lime Juice & sugar). All cocktails and wines at HH are $7 as are the snacks consumed only at the Bar.
We shared an assortment of Kos Meat Balls (Ground Beef & Lamb, Cumin Tomato Sauce, Yogurt), Classic Hummus and Gyro Sliders. (Beef, Tzatziki, Tomato, Parsley).
The dinner menu has choice feasts under the headings of Spreads for the table, Soups & Salads, Sandwiches & Flatbreads, Medium Plates. Plates and Sides ranging from Taramasalata Mousse (Carp Roe), Ousía Burger, Traditional Greek Pies to Grilled Baby Octopus . Prices vary from $8 to $35, commensurate on plate and menu size.
Ousía is a family affair. The host/Manager, Enrico, is Greek-American and fluent in the language. He and his international team are welcoming and hospitable.
OceanaPoke and Oceana are sister dining establishments located at 1700 Broadway in the Tines Square area and on the west side at 49th Street, respectively. I will report back with my reviews on those in time.
