Visitors, Denizens of New York City and US citizens alike together with devotees, fans and loyal theate-goers should collectively be attending as many Broadway shows as possible this time of the year especially as the Tony Awards Nominations were recently announced.
Tootsie the comedy-musical garnered a healthy eleven nominations including Best Musical, Leading Actor, Santino Fontana, and Costume Design.
The Cher Show – an impressive three noms including Stephanie J. Block as the older and one of three portrayals of Cher and one for the legendary Bob Mackie’s outrageous costume designs.
I had the pleasure to see both on Broadway recently and the energy, excitement and sheer bravado was very prevalent throughout both productions.
Santino Fontana as Tootsie recreates the role of struggling New York actor, Michael Dorsey, made famous in the 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman.
This stage version is an updated 2019 rendition. No spoiler so what happened here here other than Drag works well for Fontana as Michael Dorsey morphs into Dorothy Michaels. Substitute a TV soap from the movie version to a stage musical within a musical in this current incarnation, add inter-racial relationships, plenty of comedy and fast paced acting, sunging and dancing and voilà, a recipe for a sure fire hit.
The Cher Show takes young and old alike through a roller-coaster from a talented sixteen year old ingenue to present day actress/singer/diva. Micaela Diamond, Teal Wicks and Stephanie J. Block recreate Cher at different ages, giving a montage and insight to her lifestyle and romantic relationships.
Cher meets Tootsie – a perfect duo!
